Fund of Funds
A fund of funds pools capital from investors and spreads it across several underlying funds, giving its clients diversification and manager selection in one vehicle.
How funds of funds work
These firms research and select hedge funds, private equity funds or venture funds on behalf of pensions, endowments, wealthy families and smaller institutions. They add a layer of fees, so they compete on access to managers their clients could not reach alone.
Approaching a fund of funds
- They allocate to fund managers, not directly to companies.
- Expect detailed due diligence on team, track record and operations.
- Emerging manager programmes are the usual entry point for newer funds.
